Short History of the Star Symbol

The first star symbol was discovered as a part of the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. The ancient Egyptians drew a star with five points, while the star sign in Mesopotamian society had eight points. An Egyptian goddess called Sopdet, was the goddess of the star Sirius, and was always drawn with a five pointed star on the top of her head.
From ancient Egypt the star symbol reached the shores of England, where it was heavily featured in various medieval drawings and jewelry. The English and Scottish people preferred the five pointed star over the eight pointed star, which helped to solidify the five pointed star as the most common symbol for a star used by men. In the then German culture, the most prominent symbol for a star was a six pointed star, which was preferred by the royal German high society.

During the First Crusade, the star on the coat of armor of the De Vere family was a white star that was placed there to symbol the "light and arrest upon the standard of Aubere de Vere". The star symbol of the De Vere family became incredibly notorious in English history due to the Battle of Barnet that took place in 1471. During the said battle, soldiers mistaken the white star of the Earl of Oxford for the white rose of the Earl of Warwick, which caused them to attack their own allies, and losing the battle. That is one of the main reasons why a specific star symbol was preferred moving forward, over the high number of variables that were common during those years.

Modern-Era Star Symbol

As time went on, a five pointed star was used more and more frequently, until it rose to world prominence in the 19th century. The most common use for the star symbol was in world flags, like that of Chile, Rhodanic Republic, The United States of America, Venezuela, The Philippines, Brazil, Australia, The United Kingdom, China and Cuba. After the star symbol took over country flags, it was widely used in modern military badges. A red star was used as the badge of XII Corps of the Union Army in the American civil war, the VII Crops used a five pointed star in the crescent as well.

A Star Symbol Is Born

After the star symbol took over the military, it conquered a different market in the world with the introduction of the 20th century celebrity oriented culture. The word β€œStar” became the leading phrase to use when talking about a person who rose to cultural influence and fame, birthing the term β€œstardom”. A star is a person who is so talented in what he or she does, that they are viewed as bright as a star in the eyes of the people around them. They are so talented at what they do that they are β€œbrighter than the rest of us”, there is an aura that surrounds them, they stand out in a crowd. The star symbol has turned into a way to differentiate certain people from the rest of society. Those people are not as common folks, they have something special inside that makes them as important as the stars in the sky.
