  • Make sure you switch on the NumLock,
  • press and hold down the Alt key,
  • type the Alt Code value of the arrow you want, for example for an arrow down symbol, type 25 on the numeric pad,
  • release the Alt key and you got a ↓ downwards arrow.

** Above mentioned procedure is not aplicable for MacOS.

For more information on how to use symbols, emojis please check our How to use Alt-Codes? page.

Arrow Emojis with Unicode Values

Apart from the depiction of arrow symbols just with plain lines, there are quite a few numbers of decorative arrow emojis in the Unicode world. Below there is the list of arrow symbol emojis. You may copy&paste them anywhere you like. You may also display arrow emojis, on your web page designs, and computer programs by typing their Unicode Hex values

Arrow Symbols with Unicode Values

There are more than 600 arrow symbols in Unicode library. We chose about half of them, for you not to get lost in them. You may copy-paste them anywhere you like, or you may use their Unicode values, within your HTML and other programming codes. Before you pick your favorite arrow, let's see how to type an arrow symbol in Word or in Excel?

How to type an Arrow in Word or in Excel by using it's Unicode value?

First type the Unicode Hex value of the arrow symbol to where you want it, and select the value by cursor, then press and hold down the alt key down, and pres x.

For example to type an arrow down in Word;

  • First type 2193 to where you want to make the down arrow,
  • select 2193 by cursor,
  • while the Unicode Hex value is selected, press and hold down the Alt key, and type X,
  • release the Alt key and you got a ↓ downwards arrow.

** Above mentioned procedure is not aplicable for MacOS.

Some applications/programs outside of Microsoft Word do not support the highlight + Alt+X method. In order for this to work in such applications you can use:

ALT (hold) + (numerical + symbol) + HEX/html code

eg to get a "Downwards Dashed Arrow" ⇣ whose hex code is &#x21E3 you use:

ALT (hold) and numerical keypad PLUS (tap and release) then type 21E3 on keyboard, then release ALT key.

This works in notepad and most other apps and works with all the hex codes listed above on this page.

Note this does differentiates from the standard numerical codes so they are essentially two different systems.

Is there anyway that I don't have to use the keypad on the right? My computer (or laptop, I guess) doesn't have one. Also, I cannot copy and paste the symbol because when I do, it messes up the formatting for my entire page.

John 2016-02-15 14:33:27

@Alejandro Ochoa G.

Hopefully that works. You will have to copy/paste as it is a unicode character, not ASCII.

Type 27FA and then hit Alt+X - or type 27FA and highlight and then hit AltX; either way, the same thing will take place. Select the arrow and paste - I did here and, pre-post, it seems to have worked..

Alejandro Ochoa G. 2016-02-10 15:38:50

In Word, you can type the following:

then pulse the Enter key, and you will get a double-headed, horizontal arrow.

But, when you copy the beautiful arrow and try to paste it in some web platform or browser, this happens:

The more common name for the symbols is up arrow, down arrow, left arrow and right arrow - I think this is the first time I've seen the 'ward' suffix appended to them.

The suffix 'ward' most often indicates movement as in Jeff D's truck going backwards. The arrow keys on my keyboard are stationary and thankfully they are not showing any tendency to be otherwise.

I want to write a few lines of code for converting it from the prior format to the secenond format in Microsoft word or even Latex. I want to put the rate value "K" on the top of --> (arrow) in the second format. Can you help me?

Reply: GrammarPoliceChecker 2013-03-02 20:01:19

How come you didn't correct "Jeff D", the person who commented before you? It would be incorrect grammar to say "i" instead of "I", wouldn't it? My advice: Worry about yourself.

GrammarPoliceChecker 2013-02-05 19:48:41

@GrammarPolice, if you're going to be a Grammar Police, you should probably remember that "it's" is incorrect if you're using it as a possessive

Jeff D 2012-10-29 04:44:07

Well i don't know about you all but my truck goes "backwards" when i put it in reverse.

GrammarPolice 2012-10-21 17:34:04

Adding an "s" to a word will pluralize it. As in one dog, many dogs. Upward, downward, etc. are directions. There are only uncommon examples where it is gramatically correct to pluralize those words, one example could be where you have 20 signs which say "upward". You could then say I have "twenty upwards". Otherwise, it's use, such as on this webpage, or by Faith, or "Me", is grammatically incorrect.

El Jefe 2012-10-11 11:49:15

To wrap up the "upward/upwards" / "downward/downwards" conversation:

As an adjective, there is never an 'S' at the end, however, as an adverb, either with or without the 'S' is acceptable, but in US and UK English.

π 2012-10-06 22:29:21

☻𕧠Who needs arrows? The other symbols are so fun!!!

Alice 2012-09-21 14:41:25

"Normal" English? The 's' is not grammatically correct, it doesn't have anything to do with normal or not. However, this is not a site about grammar - some people just like those things pointed out, so that their site can look more professional. That is all.

hey 2012-09-15 08:28:27
